Separate Ways
Take a look through a lens of sentiment and adoration. Peek with a perspective that paints an inner beauty of an inanimate object. Imagine watching your prized possession -- a car you loved -- pull away... the rumbling exhaust whispers goodbye as if it is aware of the time it was once your most treasured passion but it now must move on. "We touched and went our separate ways." (Straight out of a Journey song.) This is a common themeI hear when speaking to car owners at car shows. Some are showcasing a new acquisition, some are sitting beside their "old friend" they have had for decades, but in many cases, these owners have not just one story to tell about the car that they have currently, but they talk also about the "ones that got away." Life is unpredicatble and sometimes people need to part with their beloved cars for one reason or another. It is these stories that inspire me to create a type of homage to a vehicle that says more than an untreated photograph. You may not always have the car... but you can keep a passionate rendering of it forever.
Creative Process
Digital photography of a real car is enhanced with manually drawn splashes, splatters and textured scrapes of color, all using digital tools. These tools are NOT filters, and they are NOT artificial intelligence, they are simply software and technology that emulates all kinds of paints, inks, and dry media, such as chalk and charcoal. Look closely and you can discover hints of dot-patterned textures like you would see in mid-century vintage comics. These remnants of the design and printing processes of the past have being deliberately placed by the artist's hand throughout the piece as an additional remnant of an era. Bold contrast, color-drenched tones and expressionistic lines converge in a maximalist style evoking a sense of power, motion and sound through color, shape and texture.
